Former Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho has expressed his delight at seeing Newcastle United qualify for the Champions League.

Eddie Howe‘s side ended a remarkable campaign in fourth place, ensuring that Newcastle returned to the Champions League for the first time in 20 years.

It is exactly what his team deserves for a sensational season. After the heartache of the League Cup final, it would have been agonizing if Newcastle had missed out on the Champions League as well.

But the Magpies are once again dining with Europe’s elite, where they will be joined by Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United.

That has made Fernandinho really happy, and the Brazilian midfielder has admitted that he has loved watching Newcastle play this season.

Fernandinho, who is now back in Brazil playing for Athletico Paranaense, has spoke to Alan Shearer for an interview in the Athletic. He addressed the 2022/23 Premier League season, and picked out his four favourite teams.

“And, by the way, for me Newcastle, Man City, Brighton and Arsenal were the best teams by far this season in terms of playing this kind of football, you know, and it’s been really joyful to watch them play,” he said.

“It’s really nice to see Newcastle qualifying for the Champions League after 20 years.”

One of the best in the Premier League

The fact that Fernandinho has singled out Newcastle as one of his favourite teams to watch is a testament to how well the Magpies did last season.

We were not at the top end of the division by luck. It was due to hard work. We played like a team that belonged at the top. We were hard to beat, but could turn on the style and blow teams away. There were different sides to our game, with each one making us a force in the Premier League.

It has resulted in Newcastle returning to the Champions League for the first time since 2003, which is truly astonishing. It is rare that teams are able to break the established ‘big six’ and force their way into the top four. Leicester City have done it in recent years, but they are the only example.

That is why what Newcastle did is so special, and it is even more impressive when you remember where we were last season.

Fernandinho is full of praise for Howe’s side, and rightly so.
