Federico Fernandez praises Dan Langley on Instagram

There were not really too many positives to take from Newcastle United’s first pre-season game of the summer yesterday.

The Magpies were beaten 1-0 by York City, and put in an underwhelming display.

There was no real intensity or tempo, despite a lot of senior stars taking to the field throughout the game.

It was only the first game and it was also a hot day.

But losing to a team that competes in the National League North is not a great look.

One man who could lay claim to having a solid performance was goalkeeper Dan Langley.

The 6ft 7in star was making his debut between the sticks for the first-team, and was ultimately unlucky not to record a clean sheet.

The 20-year-old made some decent saves, and was handy with the ball at his feet and playing out from the back.

Martin Dubravka, Karl Darlow, Freddie Woodman and Mark Gillespie were all ruled out of the game.

So it was a big opportunity for him, and he gave a great account of himself.

The Chronicle say he is set to play against against Doncaster Rovers, and hopefully he can build on his performance against York City.

Langley has since taken to Instagram to mark his debut, writing: “Proud moment for me and my family making my first-team debut @nufc.”

Fans flocked to the comments section to congratulate him, and there were also some messages from members of the first-team.

Elliot Anderson and Karl Darlow showed their support, and there was also a nice message from defender Federico Fernandez:
