Fabian Schar’s father has opened up about the Newcastle United man’s struggles with the Switzerland national team as well as life in the North East.
Schar has been enjoying life at Newcastle since the arrival of Eddie Howe over two years ago now, but the same cannot be said for when he heads off for international duty.
His father, Martin, spoke to blue News about how his son’s position in the Switzerland team under coach Murat Yakin does not reflect his club form.
Schar one of Newcastle’s unsung heroes
Fabian Schar does not often get the praise from the media like Sven Botman, Bruno Guimaraes or Alexander Isak do, but amongst the fanbase the defender is a cult hero.
The Swiss international has been one of the Eddie Howe success stories, similar to Joelinton, after being practically banished from playing under Steve Bruce to now shining in one of the Premier League’s best defences.
It’s safe to say that Newcastle’s back line would now be lost without the £3m man who joined the club in 2018 from Deportivo La Coruna and has forged a brilliant career for himself in the North East.
Martin couldn’t be happier with his son’s position at Newcastle where he is rewarded for his good form and consistently given a starting spot in the team, but he’s frustrated with how Switzerland are treating Schar.
Speaking to blue News, Martine said: “He did a really good job of not letting all that money influence him. He still has a clique of friends from his school days and from his junior days at FC Wil, they are his closest friends.
“We never imagined that it would be enough for Newcastle and the Swiss national team and we never thought about it. He doesn’t have the same trust in the national team as he does in the club. And we heard how important trust is so that you can perform at your best.”

Schar is integral to the Magpies
Newcastle may look to replace Schar in the summer with the Switzerland-born defender turning 32 this month, but Howe will surely be keen to keep him on at the club.
His deal is set to expire in the summer of 2024 but it’s difficult to see the club letting someone so reliable and experienced walk away for free when he can still be of use.
Should Newcastle qualify for a European tournament for the second consecutive season, Schar’s services are sure to be still needed even if that is in a squad rotation role.
