Martin Atkinson made headlines for the wrong reasons in the Premier League last weekend, and the maligned official has been announced as referee for Newcastle’s clash with Bournemouth on Saturday.

Atkinson was in charge of Everton’s game with Tottenham, in which Andre Gomes suffered a horrific injury under a challenge from Tottenham’s Son Heung-min.

The referee was set to brandish a yellow card, according to the Sun, but changed his mind, and sent Son off, after seeing the extent of the injury.

That red card decision was successfully appealed by Spurs, and was overturned as a result.

But Atkinson also missed a blatant handball by Dele Alli in the box, which should have seen Everton awarded a penalty, and, as seems to be the norm, VAR officials refused to alter his decision, despite replays clearly showing the offence.

So naturally after such a poor officiating performance, Atkinson has been handed a game at Newcastle for his next outing.

Fans are not happy about Atkinson refereeing Newcastle on Saturday

The Yorkshire referee has awarded four penalties in his 10 Premier League games in the middle this season, and has brandished 31 yellow cards, as well as his erroneous red at Everton.
