Newcastle United youngster Rodrigo Vilca scored his first goal on loan at Doncaster Rovers at the weekend.

The Peruvian starlet has now made nine appearances for the League One side.

The forward had been finding his feet in the first few games since moving to the Keepmoat Stadium.

Manager Richie Wellens praised him last month for the way he had been progressing.

He said that his quality was clear, but he just needed to find that last little bit.

He described him as ‘cultured’ and said that he reminded him of Nobby Solano.

Vilca finally got himself on the scoresheet at the weekend in a 3-2 win over Cheltenham Town.

He received the ball on the right side of the penalty area, and cut in on his strong left foot before unleashing a powerful strike into the far corner.

It was a cracking strike from the South American, who will now be hoping to kick on with more goals.

And Wellens was pleased with Vilca’s contribution, saying after the game (via Doncaster Free Press): “I thought Rodrigo played really well.

“He should take a lot of confidence from his performance. He scored the winning goal but out of possession, he was so much better.

“If he does all the basics out of possession then he’s a talented footballer who can handle the ball and will cause teams problems.”

It definitely seems like Vilca is on the right trajectory at the moment.
