Salomon Rondon might have been the talk of the Tyne for several months, but he’s now the talk of the whole world after Venezuela’s shock victory over Argentina on Friday.

The Venezuelans recorded a 3-1 win against Lionel Messi and co, with Rondon playing a key role.

The international friendly marked  Messi’s first time back in the Argentina squad since World Cup 2018, and there was much excitement around the fixture.

However rather than a triumphant return for Messi, the game almost instantly became the Salomon Rondon show.

Just six minutes into the match, the striker was sent through on goal from an over the top through ball and scored in brilliant fashion.

A perfect first touch saw him bring the ball down comfortably, before unleashing a powerful volley into the top corner.

Messi could only look on in disbelief and things got even better for Venezuela from there on out.

A stunning strike from Jhon Murillo made it 2-0 just before half-time, and a late penalty from Josef Martinez made sure a goal from Argentina’s Lautaro Martinez was just a mere consolation.

In fairness to Messi, this Argentina squad looked even weaker than the one at  World Cup 2018.

His teammates spurned numerous chances to score throughout the game, despite the Barcelona man creating several clear opportunities.

However that’s not stopped Newcastle fans poking fun at the five-time Ballon d’or winner.

But more than anything, they’re just happy to celebrate their number nine’s big win.

Is Rondon really better than Lionel Messi?

Probably not, but it’s good to see the Toon star continuing his fine form on the international stage.
