Another club are targeting a move for one of the candidates who Newcastle United had identified as a potential replacement for Dan Ashworth.

Ashworth announced that he wanted to join Man United earlier this month prompting Newcastle to begin the search for a new sporting director and one name that has come up is former Liverpool man Michael Edwards.

However, Fabrizio Romano is now claiming that Liverpool will make one final attempt to persuade Edwards to return to the club after he left in 2022.

Newcastle delivered blow in search of Ashworth replacement

With the summer rapidly approaching Newcastle won’t want to waste any more time in their hunt of a new director to take over from Ashworth and continue the work he was doing in January.

It’s so important that they get this summer recruitment right after what many considered to be a weak window last year in which they brought in Sandro Tonali, Lewis Hall, Tino Livramento and Harvey Barnes who have all had limited minutes.

There was a repot recently that Newcastle were hoping to persuade Edwards to return to working at a football club, though he seems content at working on his new consultancy.

Now, their hopes have taken another blow as Liverpool have re-entered the picture as they look to bring the director back to help them in this new era once Jurgen Klopp leaves at the end of the season.

Newcastle struggling on and off the pitch

While they did record a good victory in the FA Cup last night, Newcastle’s results have been struggling as of late just as they suffered the blow of losing Ashworth to a Premier League rival.

They’ll want to get all of their affairs in order ahead of the new season when their main goal will be to emulate the form they showed last year and get back in the Champions League.

Edwards would have been a prime candidate to take over given the brilliant work he did at Liverpool who haven’t had the spending ability of the likes of Man United or Man City.

But that move does look unlikely to happen now even if Newcastle are desperate to make it happen.
