Eddie Howe has come under a lot of pressure as Newcastle United manager these last few months and a heavy defeat to Arsenal hasn’t helped.
Newcastle have already lost more games this season than they had throughout the whole of last season and we’re still in February, so naturally questions are being asked about Howe’s job.
However, while the media continue to stir the pot, Fabrizio Romano has claimed in his latest Daily Briefing that Newcastle appreciate it’s been a difficult season for Howe and they’ve not made contact with any other managers.
Newcastle are fully behind Howe
Newcastle have suffered a number of disappointing results this season having been dumped out of the Champions League at the group stages and exited the Carabao Cup after a last-minute mistake from Kieran Trippier.
But it’s important to remember to just how close they could have been to qualifying for the both the knockout rounds of Europe and semi-finals of the cup, and that would have completely turned the season on its head.
Not only has Howe had some very bad luck in games, but during December and January they’ve also suffered so many unexpected injuries, and they’ve still not fully recovered yet.
Of course, questions should be asked about some of Howe’s decisions, especially in games where he has perhaps waited too long to make a sub, but considering the circumstances he’s still got this team competing for a European spot.
On Howe, Romano said: “As for Newcastle, the feeling at the club is that they’ve had a really unlucky season. Things were moving in a very positive direction last term, but now they’ve had many injuries, and it was not possible to bring in new players in January due to Financial Fair Play issues.
“For sure it’s not going well, but I’m not aware of contacts with other managers in this moment. They know it’s been a complicated season for all parties involved, not only for the manager.”

Howe has to find solution in final three months
While it looks likely that Howe will be given this summer window to try and turn things around, he still has to be very careful that this season doesn’t quickly slip away from him.
Currently, Newcastle are ninth in the Premier League following Wolves’ 1-0 victory over Sheffield United yesterday, and West Ham and Chelsea are only a couple of points behind them as well.
With just 12 games remaining and an FA Cup fifth round tie against Blackburn tomorrow, the Magpies must be viewing every game as an important fixture and give it their all to finish this season on a high.
Champions League is almost certainly out of the question, but seventh and Conference League is still up for grabs and would be a good prize to claim after a frustrating year.
