Newcastle United are set to poach Paul McLaren from Manchester City, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Rather than looking at incoming and outgoing players, the transfer expert has provided an update on a member of staff who is going to leave Man City and join Eddie Howe’s setup at Newcastle.
McLaren is the head regional scout at the Etihad, but is reportedly set to call time on his spell in Manchester.
Fabrizio Romano says Paul McLaren is joining Newcastle
Romano has tweeted that McLaren is going to join Newcastle very soon and become the Magpies’ new head of scouting. He adds that he will likely start his new job in July ahead of next season.
He wrote: “Understand Newcastle United are set to appoint Paul Mclaren as new Head of Scouting — he’s gonna leave Manchester City where he’s young scout. Mclaren is likely to start his new job at Newcastle in July.”
This is a big step for Newcastle in their bid to snap up the best young players from around the globe. We have been linked with a lot of teenagers in recent months, but have failed to bring them to St James’ Park.
There has been a clear effort to bring in youngsters from South America. Andrey Santos and Maximo Perrone were both linked, but they joined Chelsea and Man City respectively.
The arrival of McLaren on Tyneside will be a big boost towards enhancing Dan Ashworth’s vision for the club. He wants to improve Newcastle’s youth setup and relieve the pressure on having to make mega money signings year after year.
McLaren is highly rated for his work at Manchester City, and previously worked with Arsenal for two years before his move to the North West.
Now he is heading to the North East, as Newcastle poach one of Man City’s staff members.

Man City recently did the same to Newcastle
Getting someone from Pep Guardiola’s side is quite the coup. And it is also the perfect response to them stealing Mark Leyland from us.
He had joined Newcastle from Liverpool as an analyst in late 2021. However, it was reported last month by the Daily Mail that Leyland is going to join Man City in the summer.
That is a major blow for Howe, as Leyland was reportedly having a huge impact behind the scenes on Tyneside.
Now he’s off to Man City, and will pass Paul McLaren on the way. That is who Romano believes is going to become Newcastle United’s new head of scouting this summer, and what an exciting time for him to be joining the club.
