After sitting on the bench on Saturday, Steve Bruce must start Fabian Schar against Leeds.

Newcastle’s defence got a hammering on Saturday once again, shipping four goals against Manchester United. Two of them were gifted to the returning Cristiano Ronaldo.

Once again Bruce changed his backline, with Isaac Hayden playing as a right-sided centre-back. That’s despite the fact both Schar and Federico Fernandez were on the bench.

While constantly changing personnel isn’t the answer, Schar should certainly return to the starting lineup against Leeds on Friday night.

Why Fabian Schar should start on Friday

Leeds play an incredible brand of football. They’re always exciting to watch with their relentless running and pressing. Or pointless running as Jonjo Shelvey called it last season…

They barely give you any peace on the ball, looking to retrieve possession in dangerous areas.

This is why Schar should start on Friday night.

Schar joined the club in 2018, signed by Rafa Benitez for just £3.5million.

While he can sometimes be suspect defensively, he is our best ball-playing centre-back. We need his ability in possession to bypass Leeds’ press.

We’ve seen throughout his Newcastle career how good his passing range is. And Leeds are the kind of team he can hurt with it.

Like Newcastle, Leeds have struggled defensively this season. If we can avoid their press and get the ball into their final third, the likes of Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron should be able to cause problems.
