Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar continued his fantastic form by scoring what turned out to be the winning goal against Brighton yesterday.

The Switzerland international made an important contribution last weekend in the 2-0 win over Brentford.

He assisted Joe Willock, who made no mistake with his finish to ensure the points.

And yesterday, Schar was on hand to head home from Ryan Fraser’s free-kick to make it 2-0 against the Seagulls.

It was a cracking delivery from the Scotland international.

And Schar stole a yard on his marker to power home a header that was too hot for Robert Sanchez to handle.

After the game, Alan Shearer said on Twitter that Schar was his personal Man of the Match.

Not only is Schar making important contributions in attack, his defending has really tightened up since the start of this fantastic run by Newcastle.

He is looking much more assured. And it is difficult to deny the impact new signing Dan Burn has had on the 29-year-old.

They are looking really strong together right now, which is very refreshing to see given how painfully bad Newcastle were at the back before 2022.

Hopefully Schar is able to sustain this level right the way through until the end of the season.

Today, Schar has sent a message to supporters on Twitter following his superb display yesterday.

He wrote: “This is the best feeling!! Winning and scoring at home!!”

Fabian Schar surely heading for a contract extension at Newcastle

There has been a lot of talk about the impact made by the new man Dan Burn.

But Schar deserves huge credit for his recent upturn at St. James’ Park.

He is currently looking like the player that first arrived at Newcastle who had lost his way somewhat earlier this season under Steve Bruce.

Schar has always been a great, modern-day defender on paper.

It is fantastic to see him in top form once again.

The former Deportivo La Coruna star is in his best moment for a long time. And he is surely heading the right way for a contract extension, as reports have recently suggested.
