Fabian Schar says he will ‘smash’ Bruno Guimaraes at the World Cup

Fabian Schar and Bruno Guimaraes are set to face each other at the World Cup, and the defender has delivered a warning to his Newcastle United teammate.

Schar’s Switzerland and Bruno’s Brazil have been drawn against each other, just like they were at the previous World Cup in Russia.

Interestingly, they will also face Serbia, who were also in the same group four years ago. And they are joined by Cameroon, who didn’t qualify for 2018.

There are lots of similarities between the two World Cups, and Schar will once again represent the Swiss on football’s grandest stage.

They drew with Brazil in 2018, but now they’ve got Bruno. The Newcastle midfielder is set to appear at his first ever World Cup.

He is surrounded by stars in the Brazil camp, but will see a familiar face in 11 days on November 28th. However, Schar has suggested it won’t be a happy reunion.

Schar delivers World Cup warning to Bruno

The centre-back spoke to BBC Newcastle after the win against Chelsea, and was asked about coming up against Bruno at the World Cup.

“I’ll have to smash him, honestly, this guy,” Schar joked.

“Our group is very tough with Serbia and Cameroon as well. It’s a World Cup, anything can happen, looking forward to the games and to play against Bruno as well. Not be teammates for a game but that’s part of a tournament like that.”

Friends reunited

Hopefully Schar is just having a laugh. We could do without him smashing into our star midfielder in less than two weeks. Then again, given how hot-headed Schar has been in the past, it’s difficult to say he definitely won’t do it.

The game on November 28th will be Switzerland’s biggest challenge in Qatar, but they will hope to shine at the World Cup like they did at the Euros last year.

As for Bruno, he will know his nation are one of the favourites to win the whole thing, as they usually are.

At the moment, Bruno vs Schar is the only time Newcastle players will go head-to-head in Qatar. Any further clashes will depend on how England do.

While Schar has hinted he has to get physical to stop Bruno, let’s pray that all of our players return to Tyneside in one piece!
