Fabian Hurzeler was ecstatic as his Brighton team knocked Newcastle United out of the FA Cup.

The Seagulls advanced to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup with a win in extra time, as Newcastle United endured a miserable afternoon.

Everything that could have gone wrong did go wrong for the Magpies, as Newcastle lost to Brighton.

There was also news of Lewis Hall’s injury, followed by Anthony Gordon’s red card. He will now miss the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool, as Howe ponders who will replace Gordon at Wembley.

It was a disastrous afternoon on Tyneside, as Fabian Hurzeler secured his second win of the season at St James’ Park.

Fabian Hurzeler explains how Brighton beat Newcastle United

Following the game, Fabian Hurzeler spoke to the Argus.

He highlighted what his Brighton side did well against Newcastle United, and Eddie Howe’s players should certainly pay close attention to what Hurzeler has said.

“Not only the character but also I think the performance was quite impressive,” he said.

“Of course we had some setbacks during the game but we reacted always in a good way. We stayed very calm. We found the good balance between defensive stability and controlling the game in possession.

“Then we had of course some phases of the game where we had to suffer.

“In the end, we did it in quite an impressive way.”

Newcastle United were not calm at all during FA Cup exit

Hurzeler says Brighton were ‘calm’, which is exactly what Newcastle United were not.

Newcastle never looked comfortable against the Seagulls. They struggled to disrupt their patterns of play, while the Magpies’ attacks lacked rhythm.

There was a chaotic nature to Newcastle’s play – a real lack of composure when it mattered most. Bad decision making, poor communication – Eddie Howe’s players showcased the lot as they crashed out of the FA Cup.

One player who will wish he had stayed calm is Anthony Gordon. That is something he has been for the majority of his Newcastle United career, silencing the critics who have questioned his temperament.

But it boiled over on Sunday. While the Brighton players stayed calm, Gordon lost his head. For that reason, Gordon will now miss a second cup final for Newcastle. And it is the only cup final that the Magpies will play in this season.
