Burnley expert Joe Redmond has been left ‘fuming’ by the news that Chris Wood is joining Newcastle United.
It emerged on Tuesday night that the 30-year-old is on the brink of joining the Magpies. Wood became a target on Sunday, and Amanda Staveley and co have moved quickly to close in on his signature.
A reported release clause between £20million and £25million has made this deal possible for Newcastle. Otherwise there’d be no way Burnley would sell their star player to a relegation rival.
But the deal is on, and Redmond from the TurfCast podcast has given Geordie Boot Boys his views on the move.
Burnley expert hammers Clarets for letting Chris Wood join Newcastle
“Fuming,” he said when asked about his feelings towards the transfer.
“Release clause or not we shouldn’t be selling to a direct relegation rival, unless it’s like £50million. It’s a juvenile mistake putting that in there in the first place if the reports of it being around £20million are true.”
It’s an interesting deal, as it strengthens Newcastle and weakens Burnley – two clubs who are battling for Premier League survival.
As it stands, only goal difference separates the two teams, but Redmond believes Wood could propel Newcastle to survival.
“I think it seriously weakens us [Burnley], so swings the pendulum further in your favour. We need to buy, and fast.”
Toon money put Burnley at risk
While Newcastle are landing Wood, the first Burnley player they were linked with post-takeover was James Tarkowski. The Magpies also reportedly looked at Ben Mee.
PIF and co have been linked with a ridiculous amount of players, with the Telegraph claiming Tarkowski could be one of their first signings back in October.
The threat of Newcastle became very real last year, and Redmond thought a move for the England international was more likely than Wood.
“There’s a lot of noise around Tarky [Tarkowski] going there, and I would have thought that one would have had more legs. I would imagine that would make more sense in the summer when his contract runs out.”
What kind of player are Newcastle getting in Wood?
While Newcastle may look at Tarkowski once again in the summer, for now they are happy with Wood.
The New Zealand striker fills a vital hole in Howe’s squad, and will look to add to his impressive Premier League tally in a black and white shirt.
Wood has hit double figures in the past four seasons, but currently only has three goals to his name. He’s a streaky player, but Redmond believes he will ‘guarantee’ goals for the Magpies.
“When he’s good he’s good, when he’s poor he’s diabolical. He’s such a confidence player.
“But he guarantees goals – usually around 10-14 per season. He will get in the box and get on the end of crosses. He’s decent at hold up play too, provided he’s given the space.”
Burnley’s loss is Newcastle’s gain, and this could be a huge moment in the race for Premier League survival.
