Former Newcastle midfielder Vurnon Anita has finally got himself a new club.

The Dutchman has been a free agent since September last year, but finally someone has taken a punt on him.

Anita has joined Bulgarian side CSKA Sofia on a deal until the end of the season. His new club are currently fourth in the league, nine points adrift of leaders Ludogorets.

The Ajax academy graduate has had a rough time since leaving Newcastle.

He was released by the Magpies in 2017, following promotion back to the Premier League. Anita played a lot of football in the Championship, but his efforts weren’t rewarded with a new contract.

Instead, Anita remained in the second tier. He signed a three-year deal with Leeds United, and he looked like a good bit of business.

However, he played just 22 times in his first season.

The following year, Marcelo Bielsa arrived, which pretty much signalled the end for Anita. He wasn’t given a squad number, then he was farmed out on loan to Willem II.

As he entered the final year of his Leeds deal, Anita’s contract was terminated.

It’s sad to see what has happened to Anita. He was often reliable in black and white, but was never really used properly. He was versatile and technically gifted, but never really hit the heights expected.

Here’s hoping it works out for him at CSKA Sofia. Good luck Vurnon!
