The landscape of Newcastle United will change if they qualify for the Champions League this season.

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle are currently fifth in the table, but still have a chance of finishing in the top four. That would be a remarkable achievement for Howe’s first full season as manager.

The Magpies are currently suffering with financial fair play limitations in the transfer market due to a lack of revenue coming into the club. However, that would change if we were to become a Champions League side.

Playing in Europe’s elite competition would massively increase Newcastle’s revenue, and open us up to an even wider world of sponsorship opportunities.

Finishing in the top four would be a real achievement and give the players the chance to test themselves in the Champions League. And it would also be great for the commercial side of the club. And that is a big concern for our rivals.

Carlo Jacomuzzi has major Newcastle fear

Former Napoli Sporting Director Carlo Jacomuzzi has spoke to Arena Napoli about Newcastle’s spending power, and how it could become even bigger if Howe’s side qualify for the Champions League.

“Let’s not forget Newcastle,” he said.

“Who have an impressive ownership and if they go to the Champions League they will become a loose cannon on the European market. And they could really come to Italy and raid our strong points.”

Jacomuzzi is clearly concerned by the potential of Newcastle, and fears that their spending could go through the roof after qualifying for the Champions League.

That is a very real possibility, with PIF boasting incredibly deep pockets. The main thing that is stopping them spending right now is FFP.

But that will be less of an obstacle with European qualification – especially if it means playing in the Champions League.

Jacomuzzi is right to be fearful of how it could impact the European market and specifically his native Italy, as Newcastle may shop abroad to get more value. The over-inflated Premier League means you are always paying over the odds for domestic-based players.
