Erling Haaland breaks Newcastle legend's record after 29 years

For a long time, Andy Cole has been the player who has scored the most goals in a single Premier League season, but that record has now been beaten by Erling Haaland.

During the 1993/94 season, Cole scored 34 goals for Newcastle United as Kevin Keegan‘s side came third in their first ever campaign in the Premier League.

It was a remarkable effort by Cole, who had held the record ever since. He had been joined at the top by another Newcastle legend in Alan Shearer, who fired in 34 goals for Blackburn the following season.

Both Cole and Shearer have been in a league of their own, although they were boosted by the fact that the Premier League was a 44 game season back then. Now it is down to 38, reducing the likelihood of their record being broken.

But now it has.

Erling Haaland breaks Andy Cole record with 35th goal of the season

Manchester City took on West Ham United on Wednesday night, and went back to the top of the Premier League table with a 3-0 win over the Hammers.

Unsurprisingly, Haaland was on the scoresheet, as he continues to enjoy a remarkable first season in England.

The 22-year-old scored Man City’s second goal of the evening, dinking a glorious effort over Lukasz Fabianski after being played in by Jack Grealish.

It was his 51st goal of the campaign, and his 35th in the Premier League. That means he now holds the record for the most goals scored in a single season.

Cole has been replaced at the top, 29 years after his outrageous efforts in black and white.

Haaland is an absolute machine, and will likely extend his lead at the top before the season comes to an end. He could even break his own record next year.

The Norwegian forward was given a guard of honour by his Man City teammates after the game, as they paid tribute to their number nine’s astonishing achievement.

At the start of the season, Shearer predicted that Haaland would break the record for most goals in a season, and it turns out he was right.
