Newcastle United welcome Manchester United to St James’ Park on Sunday, and the Red Devils looks set to have Anthony Martial in their squad.

Erik ten Hag has received a couple of major fitness boosts ahead of the trip to Newcastle, with Marcus Rashford likely to be fit after missing the recent England camp with injury.

He is the dangerman that Eddie Howe’s side need to stop, but now there is another forward who could cause the Magpies problems.

“He is training. So, for two weeks now,” Ten Hag said.

“I think he can be in the squad for Sunday.”

Martial turned down Newcastle move last year

Martial returning is a boost for Manchester United, as he has not featured for the Red Devils since February 1st. His season has been crippled with injuries, after returning from his loan spell at Sevilla last season.

The 27-year-old left Old Trafford in January 2022, agreeing a deal with La Liga side Sevilla until the end of the season. However, the move was a disaster, with Martial only scoring once.

And it came after he turned down the chance to join Howe at Newcastle.

The January transfer window of 2022 was a crazy one for Newcastle, with the new owners looking to improve the squad and ensure it remained in the Premier League. An outrageous amount of players were linked, one of which was Martial.

The Magpies tried to sign the forward on loan, but he turned down the chance to move to St James’ Park. Rather than join the fight on Tyneside, he wanted to go abroad.

Fast forward to the backend of the 2022/23 campaign and Newcastle will feel like they had a lucky escape. Martial was extremely poor at Sevilla, while he has suffered injury after injury since returning to England.

Now he is fit again, and ready to make his comeback at the ground he could have called home last season. Hopefully it not Martial who has the last laugh.
