Newcastle United’s U23s made the club proud on Monday by battering rivals Sunderland 5-0 at St. James’ Park.

Goals from Owen Bailey, Cal Roberts, Luke Charman (2) and Elias Sörensen meant the Magpies ensured a superb derby victory.

3381 people watched as the youngsters picked up their first Premier League 2 Division Two points of the season.

Sunderland actually threatened early on but the Magpies soon started to dominate.

Bailey and Roberts struck in the first half to put Newcastle in a comfortable position at the break.

Then Charman’s well-taken brace put the result beyond any doubt with Sörensen putting the icing on the cake.

It was an excellent victory by manager Ben Dawson’s youngsters.

It was a nice consolation given the senior side’s inability to beat Cardiff City when they perhaps should have done on Saturday.

Rafa Benitez’s men could only manage a 0-0 draw in Wales despite having good chances to steal all three points.

Reaction

The result suggests that the future bodes well for Newcastle, who could do with some fresh young talent on the scene.

With money tight no thanks to Mike Ashley, it’s therefore important for the U23s to be showing they could be of use at senior level.
