Elliot Anderson’s Newcastle fate remains in the balance according to Fabrizio Romano

Elliot Anderson is having a rollercoaster of a season at Newcastle United, one minute he’s in the squad pushing for a start, the next he’s nowhere to be seen.

Now Fabrizio Romano has written in his column for Caught Offside that no decision has been made yet about the future of the academy graduate: “A decision on what to do with Elliot Anderson next season has not yet been made. 

“I’m told Eddie Howe asked the team and the club to be totally focused on qualifying for the Champions League before they make any decision – this is also why no talks are taking place for new signings yet – Newcastle will take their time.

“They are happy with Elliot’s impact and development but his future is open and undecided at the moment.”

Anderson has made 14 appearances this season as he continues to develop

It’s likely that Anderson will remain on Tyneside to continue to fight for a place in Eddie Howe’s starting lineup. Howe seems to be happy with his development and is more than open to giving him a chance in the team when the time is right.

It would be a shame to see him loaned out again, and it could knock his confidence after having a season with the first-team. It could feel like a step back for the 20-year-old Whitley Bay-born midfielder.

Anderson has had some exciting cameos this season and has also seen a perfectly good goal chalked off by a poor VAR decision. He’ll be desperate to kick on and establish himself as an important figure for Eddie Howe.

Sean Longstaff has shown that there’s always room for an academy graduate in the team as Longstaff has been ever-present for Newcastle this season.

The Geordie Maradona is under contract until 2026

Nicknamed the Geordie Maradona by Joey Barton after his loan spell at Bristol Rovers, Anderson is undoubtedly talented and Newcastle fans are desperate to see him succeed.

Again, I can’t see him moving away from the club he loves unless he’s told categorically that he has no future here, which just isn’t the case. He’s under contract until 2026 so there’s no rush for Newcastle to make any decision on his future unless they’re thinking of offering him a new contract.

I think the panic button was hit when this news came out, but if you look at what Romano said, it’s not as bad as what people are making out. It’s just a sensible decision by the club that is affecting everyone, not just Anderson. They’re waiting to see what competitions they’re playing in next season before deciding anything.
