Eddie Howe wants ‘excellent’ Newcastle player to sign a new contract now

Newcastle United will need defensive signings this summer, there is little doubt about that.

Indeed, their defensive issues were again on show despite Saturday’s thrilling win over West Ham, with pundits pointing out just how bad things are on that front when compared to last season.

Sven Botman will face a long road back to recovery after his second serious knee issue of the campaign, while Jamaal Lascelles has also sustained an ACL injury.

Newcastle are believed to be looking to bolster their defensive ranks this summer but, as ever, FFP may be an issue.

Eddie Howe has already warned that it could take years to become a regular force in the Premier League, such are the financial limitations PIF are working under.

The manager has also warned that a large-scale rebuild may not be possible this summer due to FFP.

With that in mind, he may have to look internally for help during this defensive injury crisis.

Which brings us to Paul Dummett.

Paul Dummett could now sign a new contract with Newcastle

According to The Chronicle, the club will certainly be investing in a new central defender this summer.

Still, they may also hand a new contract to the former Wales international – who is currently on course to be a free agent this summer – in order to provide cover and competition.

Howe is said to be keen to keep the academy graduate at St James’ Park despite his lack of game time.

Eddie Howe has already made his feelings on Paul Dummett clear

During one of his only two starts this season, Howe was effusive in his praise of Dummett.

The 32-year-old partnered Emil Krafth in a makeshift backline for the Carabao Cup win at Manchester United in November, with Howe roaring the two were “excellent together.

Howe has consistently described Dummett as “excellent” behind the scenes too, so his stance on the long-serving defender is certainly clear.

With that in mind and considering the mounting injury crisis, perhaps it’s of little surprise that Dummett could have his deal extended.
