Ever since buying Newcastle United in October 2021, it has been PIF’s ambition to take the club to the top.

They want to regularly challenge for major honours and compete in the Champions League, with PIF aiming to make Newcastle an elite club.

One trophy has arrived, with the Magpies winning the Carabao Cup in March. But the Newcastle United owners want more, with Yasir Al-Rumayyan insisting it is just the first.

Returning to the Champions League is the club’s next aim, while Newcastle could finish as high as second if they finish the current campaign strongly and other results go their way.

Newcastle United are ‘not far’ away from being Premier League title contenders

As Eddie Howe’s side continue to climb up the Premier League table, outsiders are beginning to ponder how far away they are from challenging for the title.

According to former Birmingham City defender Paul Robinson, Newcastle United might only need a couple more signings to compete for top spot in the Premier League.

Speaking on Ben Foster’s YouTube channel, Robinson was asked how far away Newcastle are from becoming title contenders.

“The way that they’re playing, I would say not far when you look at them,” he said.

“They’ve got great balance. They’ve got a solid midfield, great attacking ability up top and a solid backline.

“Would you want to add to the backline? That little bit more know how of Champions League football when they get there. That more experience. Another goalkeeper in case Nick Pope goes down.

“I don’t think they’re far at all. And they’ve got a really good manager.”

How many signings Newcastle United need this summer

The two positions mentioned by Robinson look set to be addressed this summer.

Newcastle are going to sign a centre-back, as they eye up Fabian Schar’s long-term replacement.

Another goalkeeper could also be on the agenda, with Newcastle targeting James Trafford. He would likely arrive with the view to taking Nick Pope’s place in the starting XI when the time is right.

But Howe will need more than that to challenge for the Premier League title.

Despite Jacob Murphy’s form, it is absolutely essential that a right winger arrives during the summer transfer window.

Elsewhere, Newcastle will aim to bring in a striker with Callum Wilson looking likely to leave.
