Eddie Howe has to be pleased with how Newcastle United’s pre-season has gone so far, if only for the emergence of one man.

While all the talk going into the summer was about Newcastle making major signings ahead of the Champions League, it is a young lad from Whitley Bay who is causing the most excitement.

It has been a summer to remember for Elliot Anderson, who was the Magpies’ star of the show out in America. He was shining before that too, producing standout performances against Gateshead and Rangers.

Anderson has scored four times during pre-season, which is four more than he has never managed in a competitive game for Newcastle. But this season looks like it is going to be a big one for the 20-year-old, who is now pushing for a place in Howe’s starting XI against Aston Villa.

The local lad has really improved his fitness, and is in peak physical condition heading into the new campaign. Howe is very happy with Anderson, having previously had some reservations.

According to the Telegraph, Anderson is now fit enough to play any midfield position under Howe. However, the report adds that Howe previously thought that the youngster was too slow to play on the wing in the Premier League.

In comparison to the likes of Anthony Gordon and Miguel Almiron, Anderson is nowhere near as fast. But his close control and dribbling ability is what sets him apart, and he can offer Howe real versatility this season.

He has looked at his best on the left of the midfield three, but he could also be used elsewhere in midfield or on either flank. That versatility will delight Howe, as he loves players who can operate in different roles.

We have seen so many players raise their levels since Howe became manager, and now Anderson is doing the same. The work he has done off the pitch to become fitter, more physical and sharper is commendable, and should result in him playing a much bigger role this season.

It is in the middle of the park where he will likely shine, as that is where he has had his success this summer.
