Eddie Howe suggests 22-year-old Newcastle player could actually be involved vs Luton tomorrow

Newcastle United are sweating on the fitness of Anthony Gordon ahead of Saturday afternoon’s game against Luton Town.

The 22-year-old is a major doubt after being forced off during the Carabao Cup defeat to Chelsea. He was on the end of a terrible tackle from Moises Caicedo in just the second minute that incredibly did not result in a red card.

It initially looked like he was going to be fine to carry on, but early in the second half he went down again and his game was over.

Anthony Gordon became the latest Newcastle player to succumb to injury, and his absence would leave the Magpies very light in attack. If he is unavailable, there is a chance that Matt Ritchie could start against Luton. He has not started a Premier League game since December 2021.

But Gordon has not officially been ruled out, and Eddie Howe has at least offered fans some hope that the Toon number 10 could actually feature at Kenilworth Road this weekend.

Ahead of Newcastle’s game against Luton Town, Howe has spoke to the media. He provided an update on Gordon’s condition after picking up an injury on Tuesday night.

“Anthony [Gordon] was sore,” he said.

“It was a horrible challenge on him. I am really disappointed with the tackle.

“We will see how he is today.”

With Newcastle yet to make a final decision on Gordon, it is at least encouraging that he is still in contention. That would suggest that it is not a serious injury.

It is always difficult to tell with Howe, though. His injury updates are often very cryptic, and it is very rare that he provides the full picture when talking about his players to the media.

He has stated that a late decision will be made on Gordon, and hopefully the decision is that he is fit enough to play. We desperately need him to be involved against Luton, as he is our most productive player in the final third.

The winger is enjoying a spectacular season, boasting six goals and six assists so far. His numbers are fantastic, and it would be great if he could add to them on Saturday.

That may or may not happen, but there is at least a chance of him being involved against Luton. Considering how bad the tackle from Caicedo was, that is a massive positive.
