Eddie Howe has given another worrying injury update on one of his Newcastle United players after a 2-2 draw against Bournemouth on Saturday.
It’s been a relentless season that has seen a completely unexpected number of injuries in this Newcastle squad and their luck doesn’t seem to be getting much better with yet another scare in yesterday’s game.
Speaking to NUFCTV, Howe made it clear that Fabian Schar was in some pain after blocking a shot with his arm at the very end of the game and it looks like it may have twisted it.
Howe says Newcastle have fresh injury concern
It’s the very last thing Newcastle will have wanted especially after the latest injury news that Callum Wilson will be out for around three months as he requires surgery on his pectoral tendon.
That puts a lot of pressure on Alexander Isak who is also out and missed the game against Bournemouth, meaning both Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes were at times playing out of position.
Newcastle really can’t afford to pick up another knock as they’re already down to the bare bones and had to give Joe White his debut after returning from a loan spell at Crewe Alexandra in League Two.
The only possible positive you could take from it being Schar that has taken a knock is that they have Jamaal Lascelles as backup while the midfield and attack look extremely light in depth right now.
On Schar, Howe said: “We’re hopeful it’s not too serious but I think it was the shot at the end that’s hit his arm, I don’t know whether it’s twisted but it was a ferocious strike and obviously Fabian was in a bit of pain. Hopefully not too bad we can’t afford another injury.”

Newcastle at risk of losing star man
Newcastle have lost a number of key players to injury this season and now losing Schar would be another huge blow as he’s been one of the players of the season so far.
In a defence that contains both Sven Botman and Kieran Trippier it says a lot about the £3m signing that he has arguably the best and most reliable defender for Newcastle this season.
Schar plays an integral role in the way that Newcastle are wanting to play by bringing the ball out of defence and while at times against Bournemouth it looked like they had put themselves under unnecessary pressure, he was always calm and collected on the ball.
It’s now a waiting game as Howe hopes to have the defender available for the trip to Arsenal next weekend but after his luck this season won’t be getting his hopes up.
