Eddie Howe says £3m Newcastle player is almost back from injury now

Newcastle United fans held their breath when Fabian Schar limped off the field during the Premier League Summer Series draw with Chelsea.

Fabian Schar had become a huge part of Newcastle‘s success last season playing in that defensive lineup that finished the season with the joint best defensive record alongside Manchester City.

The £3million signing from Deportivo La Coruna had looked to be on his way out of Newcastle under Steve Bruce but found a new lease of life under Eddie Howe, playing arguably the best football of his career.

Fabian Schar has a reputation for going down injured every game

Schar has a reputation amongst fans for going down holding his head in literally every game, but he always manages to get up and continue, however when we see him limp off the field and not come back on, that’s when we start to worry.

Eddie Howe has yet to bring in a centre-back in this transfer window meaning that if Schar is forced to miss any games we only really have Jamaal Lascelles as back-up.

Thankfully, however, Eddie Howe has suggested that the injury Schar picked up in Atlanta wasn’t as bad as feared and he could still be in line to feature in this weekend’s Sela Cup.

Howe will make a late call on Schar ahead of the Sela Cup games

Howe spoke to the media this morning ahead of the packed weekend and said that Schar is close to a return, saying (Via The Chronicle): “We don’t have a fully fit squad. We will make a late call on Fabian Schar but he is certainly very close so that is a positive.”

Hopefully Schar will get some minutes under his belt in at least one of the weekend’s games in order to help with match sharpness.

Whether or not he makes an appearance this weekend, it does sound positive that he’ll be back in the line-up when Newcastle take on Aston Villa next Saturday as the Premier League season gets underway.
