Eddie Howe says £13m star is one of his best ever Newcastle United signings

Newcastle United have been relatively restrained in the transfer market during the PIF era.

Indeed, while it would be foolish to suggest major money has not been spent at Newcastle, the idea that PIF would target fading superstars to attract attention to the club has proven not to be the case.

It’s difficult to think of too many signings that haven’t worked out at St James’ Park. Chris Wood was not the player he is now at Nottingham Forest but did play a vital role in keeping Eddie Howe’s side in the Premier League in the first place.

Matt Targett did something similar and his contribution cannot be forgotten despite a lack of action since.

Despite never playing for the club, the sale of Yankuba Minteh in June reportedly helped Newcastle avoid a points deduction.

So many of the signings have worked out to varying degrees.

Still, Howe was keen to praise Dan Burn in particular when speaking before the Tottenham game.

The Newcastle United manager in fact believes Burn – who cost a reported £13m from Brighton in January 2022 – is one of the best signings in his career.

“Without a doubt he’s one of my best signings,” he said during Friday’s pre-match press conference.

“He’s been incredible – even better than I thought he would be for us.

“We knew he was talented and would be a difference maker but when you add the leadership skills and consistency, he’s been a tower of strength for us & fundamentally important in everything we’ve done.”

Dan Burn’s strange transfer to Newcastle United has really worked out

Last month, The Athletic revealed that people behind the scenes initially viewed Burn’s signing as somewhat strange, as he was not on the club’s first list of targets.

However, it has certainly worked out since.

An absolutely stoic presence in the backline, Burn’s form this season has helped cover for the absence of Sven Botman due to injury as well as the fact Newcastle did not sign another defender.

Excellent in some of Newcastle’s biggest moments under Howe, Burn surely has to go down as a modern-day club legend.

What a signing.
