Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has sung the praises of striker Chris Wood, after he became New Zealand’s all-time record goalscorer.

The 30-year-old was on target twice for his country in their fixture with Fiji.

The 4-0 win has boosted the nation’s hopes of qualifying for the World Cup for only the third time in their history.

Wood has now etched his name into All Whites folklore. His two goals in the game took him past Vaughan Coveny in the all-time standings.

The first of his goals came just before half-time, and he then added a second via a lovely curling effort.

That was Wood’s 62nd cap for his country, so he pretty much scores a goal every couple of games.

It is good to see Wood doing the business for New Zealand. Especially since the goals haven’t really flown since his arrival at St. James’ Park.

Today, Eddie Howe gave his reaction to Wood’s impressive feat for his country.

He said: “I think it’s an amazing achievement for him and his family – a hugely proud moment, I’m sure.

“To play for your country is one thing, and a huge honour, but to actually score the amount of goals that he has and become the record goalscorer, I think is an incredible achievement.

“It’s worth noting the effort in terms of the travel, and the professionalism needed to then return to your club and give your best, but also give your best to your country.

“It can’t be underestimated. The miles that he’s covered, and he’s always done it in a very diligent, professional way so full credit to him and his family.”

Chris Wood should take confidence from New Zealand goal record

It’s great seeing Wood not only scoring a couple of goals for his country, but writing his name into the history books.

To be your nation’s leading goalscoring is a really special achievement. Hopefully he takes a lot of confidence from it going forwards.

Wood has be playing well for Newcastle.

But the goals obviously haven’t been coming as regularly as he would have liked so far.

Potentially, this, couple with Callum Wilson return to action soon, could be the catalyst for him.
