Eddie Howe has now identified which three positions he thinks Newcastle United are most in need of ahead of the January window opening next week.
Newcastle will want to add more quality in depth in this window having had to deal with an unexpected amount of injuries and suspensions in the last few months and will hope to avoid a similar situation happening again.
A new report from The Telegraph claims that Howe has prioritised bringing in a new midfielder and a new forward but would also like to add another goalkeeper to his ranks.
Howe names three areas he wants to improve
It’s no surprise that Newcastle are after a midfielder given Sandro Tonali’s lengthy suspension and that Joe Willock has been injured for most of the season.
Kalvin Phillips seems to be priority number one as Howe looks for a more defensive minded midfielder to try and sure things up at the back where Newcastle have been leaking goals recently.
Another thing the team have struggled with is keeping both of their strikers fit. Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak have suffered big injuries in their time in the North East and it’s not safe to rely on just the two of them to stay fit for a whole season.
The difficult part is finding an attacker who is of a good quality but who also would not mind being a rotation option as Isak looks to be Newcastle’s long-term forward.

Howe may be losing faith in Martin Dubravka
The final position Howe wants to bring in is a goalkeeper despite having two in his team who already have a fair amount of Premier League or European experience.
Nick Pope’s injury means that Dubravka has had to step up in his place but the performances have been very lacklustre and Newcastle have never looked so weak at the back since Howe came in.
Loris Karius is another option having spent time at Liverpool a few seasons ago, but Howe clearly does not want to rely on this goalkeeping dup for the rest of the season.
David de Gea is a name that has been mentioned a few times and would not cost anything in transfer fees, but it remains to be seen if the interest in the former Man United shot-stopper is genuine or not.
