Eddie Howe may have sold £15m Newcastle player he had a plan for only months ago

Decisions will need to be made at Newcastle United in January.

While FFP limitations loom large once more, Newcastle may have to be in a position where they sell to buy.

Spending big money next month may reportedly have a negative impact on what happens this summer, should the club not raise funds elsewhere.

Indeed, it was claimed by the Daily Telegraph earlier this week that one of Bruno Guimaraes, Sven Botman or Alexander Isak would need to be sold were that to happen.

So, loans look the most likely option ahead of the window in terms of incomings while Newcastle work on moving players out.

According to The Athletic, Matt Targett could be one to go, though there is a problem.

Should Newcastle’s injury crisis relent somewhat, players could leave.

Though Targett is currently one of those out injured, the report suggests the £15m defender may have been allowed to leave, albeit his fitness may complicate matters.

Javier Manquillo is another, although Matt Ritchie and Paul Dummett are seen as important figures behind the scenes.

Matt Targett transfer: Good way of Newcastle raising money

Should the former Southampton defender get back into a position to play during the January transfer window, he does look like a sellable asset.

With Dan Burn, Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall all able to play left-back, Eddie Howe is well-stocked in that area.

Targett is someone Howe said he rates and there was even a plan to play him in central midfield during the Carabao Cup win over Manchester United as the Newcastle boss looked to replace Sandro Tonali.

That, however, did not last long due to the 28-year-old getting injured.

With just over two years to go on his contract and following reported interest from the likes of Nottingham Forest and former club Fulham, there may be merit in allowing him to leave, should he get back to full fitness.
