Eddie Howe is really pleased with Anthony Gordon’s start at Newcastle

Newcastle United take on Liverpool on Saturday, and Eddie Howe could be in line to give Anthony Gordon his first Toon start.

The 21-year-old has made two appearances off the bench for his new club since his January move from Everton. The Magpies paid £45million for the winger.

Gordon was lively on his debut against West Ham, and got an even longer run out at the weekend. He was brought on in the 36th minute for the injured Joe Willock, and had to play a different position.

Rather than operating out wide, the youngster was asked to play a central role behind striker Alexander Isak.

It didn’t lead to victory for Newcastle, but Howe was happy with what he saw from Gordon, and has been pleased with his start to life on Tyneside.

After the 1-1 draw with Bournemouth, Howe spoke to the Northern Echo. He was asked if Gordon has now given himself a chance to start against Liverpool.

“Yeah, he has,” Howe said.

“It will be interesting [against Liverpool given Gordon’s Everton connection]. But I have to say he’s trained really well, played really well in the two games he has had and we’re delighted with him.”

On Gordon playing centrally, Howe added: “Anthony came on and did really well in that central zone.”

Bright start to Gordon’s Newcastle career

While Howe will be disappointed with our most recent draws, he appears to be very happy with Gordon’s start to life as a Newcastle United player.

He joined the club on January 29th, and has made quite the impression over the past couple of weeks. Fans have been excited by what they have seen, but it is Howe’s opinion that matters most. The Toon boss is ‘delighted’, and believes that Gordon has looked really good in training.

His work during the week will have made Howe more willing to throw Gordon on during the previous two games – particularly the draw with Bournemouth. There was still about an hour to play, and he was going to play out of position.

But Howe clearly trusts Gordon already, which is a promising sign of things to come. Now he could be in line for his first start, against his former club’s biggest rivals Liverpool.
