Eddie Howe hints that Newcastle could have advantage vs West Ham on Sunday

After both Newcastle and West Ham’s weekend was ruined by VAR, the pair are set to face off on Sunday at the London Stadium.

The two sides that were robbed on Saturday will go head-to-head this upcoming weekend, with both teams no doubt looking to bounce back after a shocking afternoon of officiating.

David Moyes’ side had a late equaliser against Chelsea wrongfully chalked off. As for Newcastle, they were denied victory against Crystal Palace after VAR incorrectly decided that Tyrick Mitchell’s own goal shouldn’t stand because of an apparent foul on the goalkeeper.

Both were shocking decisions, and now the two teams must go again on Sunday.

Eddie Howe has commented on his side’s next fixture, and his comments suggest that the Magpies might have an advantage over the Hammers.

Howe on West Ham vs Newcastle

After the 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace, the Toon boss spoke to NUFC TV. He was asked about the club’s next game, and how having a full week to prepare could benefit his team.

“We probably need that little break, hopefully to welcome a couple of players back,” he said.

“There’s obviously no guarantee with that with training to do. But we’ve missed the individuals concerned: Bruno, Callum, Maxi, Jonjo. They’re massive players for us and we’d love to get a couple back soon.”

West Ham face midweek Europa tie

Newcastle have a full week to prepare for the trip to London. They could also have the luxury of key players returning. Both Allan Saint-Maximin and Bruno Guimaraes were close to featuring against Palace, and will hope to be fit in time for Sunday.

But while Howe has multiple days to prepare and a potentially strengthening squad, Moyes can’t turn his attentions to Newcastle just yet.

His side are in Europa Conference League action on Thursday night. They face FCSB at home, and teams famously struggle in their first game after a European tie.

That could play into Newcastle’s hands. Howe only has to focus on facing West Ham this week, but Moyes has to juggle two fixtures.

It might only be a small advantage, but it could make a huge difference when the two sides meet on Sunday afternoon.
