Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has provided injury updates on Dan Burn and Sven Botman ahead of facing Manchester City.

The Magpies have been on the brink of a centre-back crisis, with Burn and Botman doubts to face Manchester City.

Botman injured his knee against Arsenal, while Burn suffered a groin problem against Birmingham City.

That has cast doubt over their availability for this weekend’s game, with Emil Krafth on standby to partner Fabian Schar at the heart of the Newcastle United defence.

However, it sounds like Krafth will not be required to start at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

That is because Eddie Howe has provided a promising update on Dan Burn ahead of the Magpies’ game against Man City.

“Dan [Burn], he had a scan which was good,” he said.

“He has improved a lot very quickly, so he could be close this weekend.”

There is also positive news on Sven Botman, who has not suffered a long-term injury.

However, this knee issue – which is separate to the ACL injury he just recovered from – will result in him missing this weekend’s game versus the Premier League champions.

“It’s good news on Sven’s [Botman] scan, no long-term issue,” he said.

“Short term still some pain, we think he misses this weekend.”

Dan Burn set to rekindle rivalry with Erling Haaland

It looks like Burn will be fit to retain his place in the starting XI, which will result in him rekindling his rivalry with Manchester City striker Erling Haaland.

The duo have had some real battles in recent years, with Haaland and Burn squaring up to each other in March 2023 after the Geordie defender fouled Jack Grealish during a defeat at the Etihad.

They also went to war earlier this season during a 1-1 draw at St James’ Park. Haaland was left with a bloodied ankle and a hole in his sock after a challenge from Burn.

Haaland and Burn now look set to lock horns once again on Saturday, and the man from Blyth will be hoping he comes out on top.
