Eddie Howe will sit down with Fabian Schar’s representatives within the next week to decide what happens next.
Schar is one of Newcastle’s greatest ever defenders, making 251 appearances since joining from Deportivo de La Coruna for around £3.5million in 2018.
Pretend you’re in charge – what are you doing with Fabian Schar this summer? 🤔
He won't play vs West Ham and may never play for us again 😪
The Swiss, however, is out of contract at the end of the season and there have so far been no updates on the prospect of a new deal.
Schar hasn’t played for Newcastle since January and he will miss the final two games of the season due to a foot injury.
While his career on Tyneside could soon be over, Howe left the door ajar.
Howe set to talk to Schar over his future
Asked about the 34-year-old during Friday’s pre-match press conference, Howe said: “We’ll have discussions with his representatives and him in the next week.”
There is a logic in keeping Schar. He’s been excellent at times this season and while his advancing years count against him, he proved before his injury he can still operate at Premier League level.
What changes you would make to this team and why?! 👀
With the likes of Malick Thiaw and Sven Botman ahead of him in the pecking order, it’s not as if Newcastle would need to rely on him quite as much as they have previously done either.
Still, there is a precedent in letting players Howe wants to keep leave the club. Reports at the time claimed that the likes of Paul Dummett and Matt Ritchie would have been kept on had Newcastle qualified for Europe at the end of the 2023/24 season.
They didn’t, and both were released. Though Schar plays more of an important role than either of those did, it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that the same thing could happen here.
Schar wants to stay at Newcastle but with European football hugely unlikely to happen next season, the club might decide against having a bigger squad for the 2026/27 campaign.
