Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has added his voice to the chorus of praise directed towards winger Anthony Gordon after his amazing start to the season.

Anthony Gordon bagged another goal and an assist in the 8-0 thrashing of Sheffield United on Sunday and was naturally a huge focus of Eddie Howe‘s pre-match press conference this morning.

Howe met the media ahead of Newcastle‘s clash with Manchester City in the Carabao Cup tomorrow night, but a lot of the attention of the presser was on the record-breaking win on Sunday and Anthony Gordon’s role in it.

Gordon was the catalyst for Newcastle’s huge win on Sunday

Gordon came off the bench to replace the injured Harvey Barnes after just 10 minutes and the £45million signing took the game by the scruff of the neck and led Newcastle to a massive win.

Eddie Howe has now spoken about what has really impressed him about Gordon this season saying (via Dominic Scurr on X): “He’s had an outstanding start to the season.

“What has pleased me most is his fitness levels and athleticism is really coming to the fore but he’s adding goals and assists which is great to see.”

With Harvey Barnes now set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines that fitness will be key as Gordon will now be expected to play more games than perhaps Howe had originally planned.

Howe gushed about Gordon’s outstanding potential

Howe then went on to talk about Gordon’s potential, once again labelling him outstanding (via Ciaran Kelly on X): “Anthony has got such a high ability and so much potential that we really feel he can push on. There is so much more to work on and improve, but the quality is there for him to be an outstanding player at this level.”

It’s a scary thought to think that there’s still plenty more to come from Gordon. If Howe can extract that potential then Gordon could become an absolute legend at Newcastle and should walk into that England side for Euro 2024.

To be fair, if he can keep out of the referee’s book that would be a huge step in the right direction as he’s already just one caution away from a one-game ban.
