Dwight Gayle is in contention to make his first appearance of the season against Manchester United. The striker has been plagued with injury woes, but is in the squad to take on the Red Devils.
There’s no chance he’ll start, but his presence on the bench gives Steve Bruce another option to turn to. Our attack has been pretty grim at times so far this season, and we’re yet to score more than once in a game.
A lot of people, myself included, expected Gayle to leave the club this summer. But when the window slammed shut, he was still a Magpie.
He was brilliant last season for West Brom, showing why he’s one of the best strikers around in the second tier. He scored 24 times, with his playoff semi-final goal helping him beat the tally he achieved when Newcastle were in the Championship.
However, the Premier League hasn’t been as kind to Gayle. He scored six times during his last season in the top flight.
But with our current attackers struggling, Gayle will likely get a chance to be the hero and save Bruce’s bacon. But can he be the saviour? Some Toon fans aren’t convinced.
