Report claims Newcastle are monitoring Liverpool striker Divock Origi

According to 90min, Newcastle United are one of six clubs keeping an eye on Liverpool forward Divock Origi.

They claim that Premier League sides Southampton, West Ham and Crystal Palace are also keen, as well as Old Firm rivals Celtic and Rangers.

If 90min are correct, interest is high in a player who only scored one goal last season.

Origi is a cult figure at Anfield, scoring key goals during the Reds’ 2019 Champions League triumph, as well as their title charge in the same year.

Those goals, such as the brace against Barcelona, turned the Belgian into a Liverpool legend. However, they paper over what has been a career that has flattered to deceive.

The 26-year-old has never hit double figures in the league, and last scored a Premier League goal in July 2020. Interestingly, that goal was against Newcastle.

He also netted against the Magpies a year earlier, a match-winning header in Rafa Benitez’s final game as Toon boss at St James’ Park.

Divock Origi is always linked with Newcastle United

It seems like the Magpies have been linked with signing Origi since the dawn of time.

Ahead of the January 2021 transfer window, Corriere dello Sport claimed Newcastle were ‘knocking on the door’ for Origi.

In the summer of 2020, a report in Belgium claimed Diogo Jota’s Liverpool arrival could force Origi to leave, with Newcastle one of multiple teams interested. There was also a claim from Turkey that Newcastle were keen.

The Chronicle reported in October 2018 that Benitez asked Liverpool about the possibility of signing Origi in January 2019.

A year earlier (August 2017), the Guardian believed he was being lined up to replace Dwight Gayle at St James’ Park.

All those rumours, yet Origi is yet to don the black and white of Newcastle.

And Newcastle aren’t the only club who’ve been relentlessly linked. Yet after all these years, he is still a Liverpool player.

Despite the latest rumour, I don’t expect anything to change this summer. And with Newcastle’s reportedly limited budget, he surely won’t be heading to the North East.
