Newcastle United almost lost Anthony Gordon in 2024 due to PSR.
The future of Anthony Gordon at Newcastle United dominated a lot of the summer, with the Magpies almost having to cash in on him to comply with the Premier League’s financial rules.
Gordon was offered to Liverpool, and a deal was almost in place. Newcastle were going to sign Joe Gomez in return, with medicals lined up for both players while they were away at Euro 2024 with England.
In the end, the deal collapsed. Newcastle United found another way to comply with PSR. Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh left, while the Magpies retained their player of the season for the 2023/24 campaign.
The Magpies were able to fend off interest in the 23-year-old, and it ended with Anthony Gordon signing a new Newcastle United contract.

David Ornstein makes Anthony Gordon claim
However, that does not mean there is no longer interest in a player who has established himself as an England international in recent months.
That is according to David Ornstein, who has spoken on the Sky Sports Premier League YouTube channel about Newcastle’s PSR situation and how it almost impacted Gordon in the past.
“If they do need to trade, I imagine first and foremost it may be players like Miguel Almiron, who looks to be on his way to the MLS,” he said.
“Maybe a Sean Longstaff. There will be other options.
“They came close to doing something on Anthony Gordon in the past. I don’t think he would be one they would like to lose. But I do hear of clubs that have huge admiration for Anthony Gordon, even Arsenal among them like Anthony Gordon.”
Newcastle United must repeat Anthony Gordon transfer trick
As Ornstein says, Newcastle will have no intentions of losing Gordon. What happened in 2024 was merely out of necessity at a time of desperation.
Given how well he has played in a black and white shirt, there will understandably be teams that are interested in him. So they should be – he is arguably the best left-sided attacker in the Premier League.
That highlights what a brilliant job Eddie Howe has done to enhance his game. It also highlights the excellent work of the Newcastle United recruitment team to sign him when they did.
Newcastle gambled on Gordon, at a time when a £45million transfer seemed excessive. But the Magpies invested in Gordon’s potential, and are now reaping the rewards.
That is what they must do in the transfer window in 2025, as Paul Mitchell figures out how to enhance Eddie Howe’s squad over the next few years.
