Newcastle United are hot favourites to sign Kieran Tierney from Arsenal this summer but Darren Bent has suggested Joao Cancelo as an alternative for the Magpies to pursue.

Speaking on TalkSPORT Darren Bent has been suggesting signings that Newcastle should make in the off-season to prepare for what will be a significantly increased challenged next season.

While many media outlets have suggested that Kieran Tierney from Arsenal to Newcastle is practically nailed on, Darren Bent has suggested that Eddie Howe should move for Joao Cancelo from Manchester City.

Darren Bent has suggested Newcastle sign Joao Cancelo from Man City

Bent told TalkSPORT’s Andy Goldstein: “One that’s quite surprising. I know Dan Burn hasn’t done badly at left back but by trade he’s a centre half: Joao Cancelo for left back. Because it looks like Man City are going to let him go. He is top drawer, he was the best full-back in the country, he just fell out with Pep [Guardiola].”

Bent did acknowledge that Arsenal could be the more likely destination especially with Tierney going to Newcastle, but that’s a bold shout from Bent for me.

It would be amazing, of course. Joao Cancelo is next level and would be a phenomenal signing for Newcastle.

Kieran Tierney remains a more realistic signing

He made 17 appearances for Man City before leaving for Bayern Munich on loan, and in those 17 outings he managed two goals and an assist. His numbers in the Bundesliga are even better. At Munich he’s managed a goal and four assists in just 13 outings.

He’s the Kieran Trippier-alike we need on the opposite flank. However, I can see him going to Arsenal and we get Tierney. Not that I’m mad about that as I rate Tierney.

The Scotland international will likely be the far more cost-effective option too, but still, it’s nice to be in the mix with names like Joao Cancelo.
