Darren Bent says 23-year-old Newcastle player has been consistently ‘really good’ this season

Newcastle United have been massively inconsistent this season, but Darren Bent believes that one Toon player has bucked the trend.

The Magpies barely wavered last season as they qualified for the Champions League, but this campaign has been much harder. A ridiculous amount of injuries and the Sandro Tonali situation has resulted in a much tougher year.

There have been incredible moments like the win over Paris Saint-Germain, while there have been dismal displays like the Boxing Day defeat to Nottingham Forest.

Newcastle United have not had a proper identity, which has resulted in Eddie Howe now having 10 games to save the Magpies’ season.

His team needs to find consistency, but that is something that Anthony Gordon has had all season.

Darren Bent impressed with how consistent Anthony Gordon has been for Newcastle United

That is the view of Darren Bent, who has been speaking on Ben Foster’s YouTube channel about Anthony Gordon making his England debut during the defeat to Brazil on Saturday night.

“I thought he played well,” he said.

“He showed no fear.

“I think there were a few question marks about him being in the squad, saying maybe it has come a bit soon, but I think he has a really good season for Newcastle. They have been inconsistent but he has been consistently good.

“I was pleased with his performance.”

No one has been better than Anthony Gordon

From a Newcastle perspective, I do think Darren Bent has got this slightly wrong on Gordon. I do not know how their could be any question marks over him being in the current England squad.

And he certainly proved he belongs on the international stage, producing a wonderful display that delighted Gareth Southgate against Brazil.

It was a culmination of all of his hard work in a Newcastle shirt, having been one of the Magpies’ best players this season. In fact, you could argue that there has been no one better.

There has certainly been no one more consistent. Ever since the first day of the Premier League season, he has been the Magpies’ biggest attacking threat.

In the league, the 23-year-old has got nine goals and six assists. The longest he has gone without a goal contribution in the Premier League this season is three games. He has constantly been decisive, and it is those numbers that have taken his game to the next level.

That is why Gordon is in the England squad right now, and it is why he should go to Euro 2024 this summer.
