Former Newcastle United winger Darren Ambrose was full of praise for his former club on last night’s TalkSPORT phone-in.
Ambrose is often complimentary about Newcastle on TalkSPORT but last night he delivered the ultimate compliment to the Magpies after they educated Tottenham at St James’ Park.
On The Boot Room show Darren Ambrose and Majestic talked about how the result wasn’t just from Spurs being poor but also because Newcastle were phenomenal and Ambrose said: “If you’re Arsenal, if you’re Manchester City, Liverpool in previous seasons, if you’re Spurs as well, I’m gonna add Spurs in there as well, Chelsea … You’re looking at Newcastle now and I think you’re concerned.

“You’re concerned for the next couple of seasons. They’ve got the buying power now, they’ve got the support, the fan base, they’ve got the manager. They’re on the up.”
It’s hard to argue with him here, that ‘big six’ should be worried after what happened yesterday. Their place is very much under threat and the attack is coming sooner than anyone anticipated.
You could even argue that yesterday’s result was Newcastle booting Spurs out of that ‘big six’ like King Leonidas hoofing the Persian messenger down the well in “300”.
With Chelsea and Liverpool both having horrendous seasons by their lofty standards, that coven is very shaky already and Newcastle coming in like they are now will definitely be sending shockwaves through the ‘Super League Six’.

Darren Ambrose mentioned Newcastle’s buying power, which is definitely a thing, or at least will be when we make enough money to balance FFP but to paraphrase someone on Twitter yesterday “What’s the point in all this money if Eddie Howe is just going to turn our poor players into world-beaters?”
“They have the manager” is the key line from Ambrose’s little speech. There are still people who underestimate Eddie Howe and I can’t for the life of my understand why.
The argument that “he’s won nothing” is pure nonsense. Jose Mourinho has won it all, but there was a time when he’d won nothing. Everyone starts from zero. Howe narrowly missed out on getting some silverware under his belt in his first full season at Newcastle with a squad of players, three quarters of which almost got relegated last season.
I have no doubt in my mind right now that Eddie Howe is the man who is going to bring that first trophy to Newcastle since colour TV became mainstream.
A couple more additions to the squad in the summer and Newcastle will be competing again next season with Eddie Howe leading the charge.
