Danny Murphy has shared that he had the same fractured metatarsal injury as the one Kieran Trippier has just picked up for Newcastle United.

The full-back lasted just a couple of minutes of the second-half against Aston Villa on Sunday.

The 31-year-old have given Newcastle the lead in the game after scoring another free-kick.

The Magpies were able to hold on, but there is now bad news regarding the England international.

He will be sidelined for the club’s ‘upcoming fixtures’ after tests showed he has fractured his fifth metatarsal bone.

The club have not placed a timeframe on his return.

But speaking on talkSPORT, pundit Danny Murphy has suggested Trippier could be looking at a six-week lay-off at least.

Murphy says he suffered the same injury during his playing days.

Reacting to the news of the White & Jordan show at 10.57am, he said: “If there’s no surgery needed, I’ve had that. That’ll be six weeks, minimum. Five to six weeks.

“Did you say ‘break’? Crack? That’s just as bad. With your metatarsal you can either crack it… when you break it they fix it, you have to have surgery. If it’s cracked you can let it heal naturally, which is what I did. I was out for six weeks when I did mine.”

Trippier fractured metatarsal injury is a major blow for Newcastle and other needs to step up

Following the highs of his goal yesterday, Newcastle fans have been quickly brought back down to earth.

Trippier fracturing his metatarsal is a very worrying development.

The defence has been transformed for the better since his arrival.

Trippier has been utterly solid at right back, and he had already become a favourite with the fans.

He is now set for some time on the sidelines.

The small positive is that it seems he is likely to play again this season, with some reports claiming saying the injury isn’t thought to be season-ending.

Between that and Murphy’s comments, Trippier can hopefully still have an impact for Newcastle this season.

Hopefully by the time he returns though, Newcastle are well clear of the relegation zone.
