Danny Murphy has praised Jonjo Shelvey, after the midfielder struck a vital winning goal for Newcastle United against Leeds United.

The 29-year-old was on target for the Magpies on Saturday, striking a free-kick against the Whites which would result in three massive points for Eddie Howe.

Shelvey curled his effort low towards the far corner.

Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier might feel he could have done better. But the strike was good enough for Newcastle, who will hopefully take massive confidence for the victory.

Shelvey stepped up when Newcastle absolutely needed him to.

It wasn’t just his free-kick. His whole performance was really good at Elland Road. And Murphy was on talkSPORT this morning praises his contributions.

He said: “He’s been heavily criticised at times this season. But when your team needs you, you’ve got to stand up and be counted. Both parts of his game were really good – getting his foot in and defending well, and good with the ball.

“It was one of his best games this season. He got the goal, although a tad fortunate, but I was pleased for him.”

Sofascore data indicated that Shelvey was quite effective regaining possession of the ball, making three interceptions.

Newcastle need Jonjo Shelvey to step up after Leeds display, he has the talent to keep Toon safe

It was a great display from Shelvey against Leeds.

Newcastle fans know how good a player he can be. In terms of natural talent, very few in the Newcastle squad can match him.

It has always been a question of consistency and also desire with Shelvey.

He is a wonderful footballer. If he can replicate this kind of display more often from now until the end of the season, then Newcastle will stand a brilliant chance of survival.

Generally, he has looked quite good since Howe came in. So there is definitely hope he can help steer the club away from danger.
