Danny Murphy has point to make about Newcastle live on MOTD

Danny Murphy was full of praise for Newcastle United on Match Of The Day 2 on Sunday.

While analysing the Newcastle vs Arsenal match on BBC’s Match Of The Day 2 the focus was, of course, mostly on Arsenal after their win, but that didn’t stop Danny Murphy saying his piece about Newcastle.

It was actually quite an impassioned mini-rant by the former England man as he said his piece about how far Newcastle have come in such a short space of time.

‘They’re only going to get better’

“Let’s be really clear about this, they have progressed tremendously and quicker than anyone thought they would, even the most avid Newcastle supporter,” said Murphy. “Their squad is tremendous, it’s getting better, they have good competition and attacking options.

“They are a very good side and they’re only going to get better.”

I may be wrong, but my gut feeling is that Danny Murphy is rarely so complimentary about Newcastle so for him to get so animated (by his standards at least) really shows how much Eddie Howe‘s Newcastle is shaking up the status quo in the top flight.

It’s hard to overlook the team sitting in third place in the Premier League at the best of times, but when that side were relegation favourites last season, everybody has to take notice.

Host, Mark Chapman also highlighted how Newcastle now have options that weren’t really available before thanks to the progression of players within the squad. He cited Jacob Murphy has his example noting how he’s keeping Miguel Almiron out of the team.

Newcastle will only improve after a summer transfer spree

All this is before we’ve unleashed our true spending power. After a few solid recruitments in the summer, Newcastle can only get better.

The long-time Newcastle supporter in me is quietly waiting for the wheels to come off as that’s what I’ve been used to for so long, but there’s a part of me that knows that this isn’t just a flash in the pan, this is the start of something great.

Hearing someone like Danny Murphy saying that the best is yet to come really hammers the point home that things will only get better.
