Dan Burn shares what he’s been working on behind the scenes during Newcastle training

Dan Burn was one of Newcastle United’s key men in their big win against Fulham on Saturday night in the FA Cup.

Newcastle secured their place in the fifth round thanks to goals from two local lads in Burn and Sean Longstaff who earned the team a much needed victory at Craven Cottage.

Speaking to NUFCTV after the game, Burn shared how he’s been trying to add goals to his game in training and is now reaping the rewards this season.

Burn wants to be scoring more goals for Newcastle

At 6ft 7 and with Kieran Trippier standing over set-pieces, you would expect Burn to be a lot more lethal in front of goal when it comes to heading home from corners or free kicks, but that hasn’t really been the case.

In fact, Newcastle have actually been pretty poor overall with set-pieces despite having quite a tall team and one of the best crossers in the Premier League.

Having said that, Burn has now recorded four goals for this season with half of them coming against his old team Fulham and the others against PSG in the Champions League and Sheffield United in the 8-0 thrashing.

It’s something that Newcastle and Eddie Howe should really be using to their advantage more often, especially when you consider the attacking output Tino Livramento could give you down the left instead.

After the game, Burn said: “It’s something that I’ve worked on a lot in training. I think most of the time it’s about trying to stay in between the posts which is what we’re always saying about the strikers, and things drop for you so yeah happy to get two goals against an old club.”

Burn is on course to have his best goalscoring season

While he has more traditionally played at centre-back at previous clubs, Burn has mainly been used as a left-back under Howe and has been given the freedom to travel forwards with the ball more often.

Although it’s not necessarily a natural position for him, the former Brighton man has done a solid job for Newcastle down the left side of defence and is now starting to be more prolific in front of goal.

You’d have to go back to the 2017-18 season when Burn last scored four or more goals in a campaign when he netted six times for Wigan who were in League One at the time.

If he can become a serious threat from set-pieces and Newcastle can add that to their attack then they may just have a good chance of climbing back up the league table and into a European position.
