Dan Burn shares the key decision made at the start of the season that led to Newcastle’s trip to Wembley

Lifelong Newcastle United fan Dan Burn knows better than most people at the club just how starved the Geordie fanbase has been of success and he’s now shared how that played into this season’s objectives.

Dan Burn is having an excellent season for his beloved Newcastle after thinking that his chance of ever playing in the black and white was gone after the takeover went through.

Speaking on BT Sport’s YouTube channel Burn recaps the feeling he had when the PIF-backed takeover finally went through and the club’s trajectory changed. Burn thought that, due to the fact the club would now be looking up the table, his chance of living his dream had gone.

Of course, he couldn’t have been more wrong and just three months later he was a Newcastle United player.

BDB scored his first, and so far only goal for Newcastle in the Carabao Cup quarter final against Leicester on their way to their first major cup final this century. Burn talked about how much it meant to him and his family but then said that a cup run was discussed at the start of the season.

“It was something that we’d spoken about at the start of the season that in years gone by the cup competitions had been secondary to the league because we’ve always wanted to stay in the league, and at some point that’s going to have to change,” said Burn.

“We need to win something; it’s been so long for this club and as a fanbase that we’ve not done that and that has to change.”

Then lo and behold, the Magpies found themselves at Wembley in February. Like everything else this club has set out to do under the new stewardship, it probably came earlier than anticipated. While it stings that we weren’t able to lift our first trophy, the fact that we got there so soon is an achievement in itself.

I like to think of that Carabao Cup final as a dummy run for what’s about to come.
