It was a top performance from Newcastle United last night at both ends of the pitch against Crystal Palace. They kept a clean sheet and won 1-0 thanks to a magnificent Miguel Almiron goal – his first of the season. Defender Dan Burn spoke highly of the Paraguayan at full-time.

It was definitely one of his best performances this season, following a strong outing this past weekend against Leicester. The goal was just the cherry on top for the 28-year-old.

Burn praised not just the Almiron goal, but his overall performance and work ethic.

“He [Almiron] deserves it, I think he had a little bit of a tough time,” he told NUFC TV.

“But I think he’s shown his quality recently and even his work rate. I’ve even said recently before that I love how much flair some of the lads have. But the big thing for me is how hard they work and I know the crowd really appreciate that.”

Burn and Almiron are examples of how both the current and new players have been transformed by Eddie Howe

Burn arrived in January from Brighton for £13million (Sky Sports) and has been a rock at the back. He’s been a big help in improving Newcastle’s defence. He’s formed a strong partnership with Fabian Schar, and the duo are now mainstays in the starting XI.

As for Miguel Almiron, he’s been with the club since January 2019. He showed real talent and excitement under Rafa Benitez. But under Steve Bruce, he found it hard to find consistency. However, he did continue to show those glimpses of talent.

He’s struggled for minutes under Eddie Howe, mainly making appearances off the bench. But starts against Leicester and Crystal Palace have allowed the Paraguay international to show what he’s capable of.

Almiron’s agent has claimed that there has been interest in him from Spain and Italy. He told this to Futbol a lo Grande, a South American radio station. He also claimed that his client’s release clause is $80million (around £59million).

But the Paraguayan is certainly making a case to Howe as to why he should be in contention for his starting XI. So perhaps Almiron may remain on Tyneside this summer. His recent performances certainly suggest he should.
