Newcastle United have only signed two midfielders in the PIF era.
While that is more of a reflection on just how much the club had to do to strengthen other areas, it does offer an indication as to why Newcastle are linked with so many options there.
Sandro Tonali has been signed and both Elliot Anderson and Lewis Miley look set for a bigger role this season, giving Eddie Howe more depth.

Now, there has been an update in regards to a man Jason Tindall reportedly wanted at St James’ Park.
Sander Berge set to leave Sheffield United for new Premier League club
Indeed, Sheffield United’s Sander Berge was strongly linked with a move to Newcastle earlier this year.
Back in March, Yorkshire Live reported that it was assistant manager Tindall driving the club’s interest in the Norway international, who the Magpies were keen to sign in January as a replacement for Jonjo Shelvey.
Hailed as “complete” during his first few months in the Premier League, he was said to have been of interest.
Now, it appears Berge is finally set to leave the Blades even despite their promotion to the Premier League.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Burnley are closing in on a move for the midfielder.

Newcastle look to have their midfield options set
Despite the lack of bodies actually signed there since the takeover, Howe now appears to have depth in that department.
Bruno Guimaraes, Joe Willock, Sean Longstaff, Tonali, Anderson and Miley could cover what is usually three starting positions in what is usually a 4-3-3 system.
With Anthony Gordon, Alexander Isak, Miguel Almiron and Harvey Barnes able to play out wide, perhaps Joelinton could take that position up again too.
Sadly, Tindall never got his wish…
