Commentator makes claim about £75,000-a-week Newcastle target live on air

Newcastle United target Phil Jones could be set for a Manchester United reprieve after the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

TalkSPORT commentator Sam Matterface made a claim live on air (23/11; 08:40) that could offer the Magpies a blow in any attempt to sign him.

He has claimed that Jones has travelled with United as they prepare to face Villarreal in the Champions League this evening.

That in itself is bizarre. The centre-back isn’t even included in United’s squad for the Champions League so he won’t be able to feature.

It could suggest, however, that interim boss Michael Carrick wants him back around the squad ahead of a trip to Chelsea on Sunday.

Newcastle were linked with Jones earlier this month. Watford and Derby are both also thought to be keen on signing the former England performer.

Jones earns £75,000-a-week at United but recently he’s been doing very little to earn himself such a wage.

Of course, that’s been through no fault of his own. Solskjaer simply hasn’t fancied him during his three-year spell at the club.

Jones’ only action this season has come for the under-23 ranks where he has played three times.

Matterface thinks that Carrick has a desire to include Jones on Sunday, with Harry Maguire suspended.

He said live on air (23/11; 08:40): “I tell you what might happen…Phil Jones has travelled with the squad tonight. He’s not in the Champions League squad but Carrick perhaps wants him back around the place. He could play on Sunday, I think.”

Would Jones be a useful Newcastle signing?

We could be about to find out! If he does get a rare outing this weekend, then it’ll be interesting to see how he performs.

Newcastle would certainly welcome another central defender and at 29, Jones isn’t particularly old.

Jones might be relying on another injury to get a chance from the start but he looks certain to be in the 20-man squad at the weekend.

The Magpies would perhaps welcome Jones’ experience at St James’ Park.

Eddie Howe’s team will need reinforcing during the mid-season window and the Manchester United man might be an ideal addition to the ranks.
