Monchengladbach assistant manager admits Thuram is likely to leave amid Newcastle interest

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Marcus Thuram, and Borussia Monchengladbach assistant manager Oliver Neuville has admitted that the forward is likely to leave.

The 25-year-old is currently in a precarious situation. He is heading into the final six months of his contract, and is on course to become a free agent in the summer of 2023.

That has led to a lot of interest in the forward, with multiple clubs believing they can bag a bargain. One of those clubs is Newcastle, with the Sun first reporting interest from the Magpies last weekend.

Thuram is a man in demand, and a man who could have a new club in January. It has been reported that Monchengladbach expect to sell him, rather than lose him for absolutely nothing.

Now a member of the Monchengladbach coaching team has spoke out on Thuram’s future, and Neuville’s comments will intrigue the recruitment team at Newcastle.

Neuville says Thuram is likely to leave

Monchengladbach’s manager is Daniel Farke, and his assistant is former Germany striker Neuville. He has spoke to Radio Sportiva about Thuram’s future.

“Marcus is having an amazing season with lots of goals,” he said.

“He has a contract until the end of the season and I think it will be difficult for him to stay at Borussia Monchengladbach.

“Obviously I hope so, but we have to be realistic: if he continues like this he will have many offers especially from England and Spain and if he continues like this there is little hope he will stay.

“An experience in Italy? Inter were already looking for him two years ago, Thuram can play both on the wing and as a centre-forward as he has been doing for the past two years and I am convinced he would do well in Italy as well.”

Newcastle must be ready to pounce

All roads appear to lead towards Thuram joining a new club in January. But who that club is remains to be seen.

There is no doubt that he would be a great addition to Eddie Howe’s squad, adding versatility to a forward line that has impressed this season.

As Neuville says, Thuram can play on the wing or through the middle, and that flexibility will surely appeal to the Newcastle manager.

The Frenchman has been in brilliant form, scoring 13 goals already this season. That’s more than any Toon player has managed – even the red hot Miguel Almiron.

Newcastle currently have a group of players that are confident and believe in each other. Adding Thuram to the group would boost the confidence even further.

He would be a very smart January addition, and is someone who wouldn’t break the bank. That will hopefully encourage Dan Ashworth to make a move.

Monchengladbach seem to be inviting offers. Now we need Newcastle to make one.
